Backcountry ranger in Glacier National Park, 1910-1913 : the diaries & photographs of Norton Pearl
Published in Unknown Binding by L. Lee ()
Author: Norton Pearl
Average review score:

Life in Montana in the Olden Days
This is an amazing book. The backcountry ranger's daughter compiled all of her father's notes about his time as a ranger in Glacier National Park in the 1910s. Unbelievable stories of beauty and hardship (he never complains about the difficulties but relishes the adventure). His language is full of colloquialisms and it is really funny. If you have spent any time in Glacier Park, this book is a must-have. You will recognize the places he talks about before there were trails or roads. Or if you enjoy history and the outdoors, it's a great read.

Very Good for the Money
Its construction is not as durable as one would like for a reference to carry with you while hiking, but what can one expect for that small an asking price? However, the descriptions and maps for each hike are easy to understand--even for the novice hiker. 25 easy hikes are included in the book, with distance, degree of difficulty, time required, and elevation change included. There are no pictures in the book, but still its very well done.

A strong cast of characters
In economically depressed Jester, Montana, twelve of the local merchants each chip in a dollar every week for the Big Bucks Multi State Lottery. When one of their numbers hit, they win over $1 million each after taxes.
In this second installment in the Millionaire, Montana series, local veterinarian Jack Hartman is laying the ground work to leave Jester. Five years ago, his wife was died and there are to many painful memories for him in Jester. When Jack becomes one of the lottery winners, he finally has the money to leave town, now he just has to get the local ranchers to see his partner, Melinda Woods, as the competent vet she is and not judge her just because she's a woman. To complicate his life even further, the local single women figure it's time for Jack to come out of mourning for his wife now that he's worth $1 million. When one lady corners Jack in the clinic's exam room, the only way Jack can think of to dissuade her is to tell her he's seeing Melinda. That evening, as Melinda is watching the local news, she learns of her "engagement" to Jack. Since Melinda has had a crush on Jack since she first met him, she agrees to go along with the pretend engagement so the local women will leave him alone. Jack soon finds his feelings for Melinda growing. Melinda is a truly beautiful person who fights hard to win the respect of the local ranchers. Her assortment of quirky pets is delightful.

Must Have Book for Montana Hunting
The Big Game Hunter's Guide to Montana, in my opinion, is an absolute necessity for any hunting trip to Montana. It contains a great deal of information on each type of game animal in Montana. It also gives regional game population and harvest information. There are several cities listed with everything from hotels to meat processors addresses and phone numbers. In short, everything one would need to know before planning a hunting trip to Montana.

Out of print, but totally worth tracking down
I read this more than a decade ago, and have never forgotten it. It's a beautifully written novel about what one must lose to retain a traditional life in America. Find it, buy it, read it.

Brave Wolf and the Thunderbird: Tales of the People (Tales of the People Series)

Review of Brave Wolf and the Thunderbird: Tales of the Peop
The message of hope conveyed by the sensitive ethnic illustrations make this work poignant not only to the members of the American Indian culture but also to readers of many ethnic backgrounds. While the colors and tones strike an immediate association with the unique southwestern colors of that landscape, the universal message delivers an identifiable sentiment to persons from many cultures. The symbolism depicted within the illustrations provoke thought even to the young reader and questioning of one's own culture's use of symbols. Parallels are then easier to make about similar symbols in a particular culture. Although unfamiliar with the Peoples Series, marketing of this kind of work to early readers can only enhance the integration and feelings of universality that are so sorely needed in our youth's literature.

Formal Butte Residence
I had this book at one time and gave it to a freind when she moved to Dallas,TX for a teaching career and now I'm trying to find a copy for myself again to remember the wonderful times and history of what must be one of the most historical cities in America. I never thought I say this when I was younger and could hardly wait to get out of that town , But I truely miss Butte ,the hometown feeling and the familarity of my youth. Don't matter where or how far away I live , Butte will always be Home !

Cold Smoke: Skiers Remember Montana's Bear Canyon and Bridger Bowl
Published in Hardcover by Mountain Press Publishing Company (January, 1997)
Authors: Edna Berg and Annie Cicale
Average review score:

GREAT
Bozeman's Bridger Bowl and Bear Canyon ski areas have had a rich and tumultuous history. In Cold Smoke that history is recorded in the words of the people who pioneered and developed what has become a world-class skiing destination.
This intriguing success story began with a small group of local skiing enthusiasts and a little ingenuity. With virtually no money, just a lot of hard work, resourcefulness, and tenacity, this dedicated bunch took Bridger Bowl from its first homemade rope tow to its current status as the pride of Bozeman, a skiing haven that has spawned world champion skiers and serves as a major site for snow and avalanche research at Montana State University and around the world.
Enlivened with the anecdotes and family photos of three generations, Cold Smoke is a personal story, told with pride, humor, and an abiding love of place.
